What is felting?

Picture
Felting is a process of turning woolen fibers into a dense, non-woven cloth.   This is accomplished through a process of matting the fibers together either with water and soap (wet felting) or with a specialized needle (dry or needle felting).   Only certain protein fibers can felt; the most commonly used are sheep and alpaca wool.
Alice~Louise Designs uses a process of machine wet felting to compact fibers after they have been knitted or crocheted into shape. The process compacts the fibers creating a dense, sturdy and water-resistant fabric. Our baskets are put through a double felting process to give them the stability they need to be practical and useful.
